Duality

“And We have created you in pairs” – Quran chapter 78 verse 8

Duality is the law of this world. Everything has an opposite: sickness/health, good/evil, day/night, etc.

“If every day is a sunny day, then what is a sunny day?”

You need the rain to be able to appreciate the sun. You need the rain to know that the sun is a sun.

A movie that perfectly demonstrates the concept of duality is Megamind. The movie starts as your standard superhero movie: there is a superhero (Metroman) and a supervillain (Megamind). They fight; the hero wins – repeat the cycle. It is a cycle; it is predictable. During one of their fights, Megamind says that their battles are like a choreographed dance. This cycle continued until one day, Megamind won the fight. He broke the cycle and thereby destroyed the natural order of the world.

In the beginning, he enjoyed this change. His purpose was to win, right? But he quickly discovered that without Metroman, he serves no purpose – because how can he be evil if there is no good? He has destroyed the natural order and harmony of this world. By getting rid of 1/2 of good/evil, he has created chaos, and when he realizes that this is the case, to establish harmony again, and repair the cycle – he is out on a quest to create a new superhero.

Food for thought: Could you appreciate who God is, if you have never met the devil?
