K-pop demon hunter – a reflection

Remember how the huntrix said that demons are without emotions

“A demon with no feelings, don’t deserve to live, it’s so obvious” – Takedown

However, we later learn, through the conversation between Jinu and Rumi, that all demons do is feel. This means that for generations, this lie about demons has been passed down to the demon hunters, but why? If they are the heroes and the demons are the villains, then why lie about their nature? Why dehumanize them? We later learn from Jinu that demons were once former humans, as we observe him traveling down memory lane – reliving his time as a human.
This leads me to the song “Soda Pop”; the lyrics go ” ‘Cause I need you to need me. I’m empty, you feed me. So refreshing. My little soda pop.” The song is about demons devouring the souls of humans. However, before they are able to snatch your soul, you must give them permission. Just like the movie ‘Sinners’, the vampires are unable to enter your home without an invitation.

Remember the train scene? The demons succeeded in taking the souls of the passengers. You initially are under the assumption that the passengers were killed, but if that was the case, why did their bodies disappear? All the demons did was take their souls, so their bodies should have been left remaining… right? Upon reflection, I don’t think that they were killed, but rather transformed. They transformed from humans into demons. Remember, Gwi-ma controls demons through shame. That is how he controls Jinu, and that is also how he was able to transform Jinu into a demon. It wasn’t until Jinu felt guilt and shame about his past decision (he left his family behind for a comfortable life) that his pattern began to appear.

So again, back to my question. When and why were the demon hunters lied to about the nature of the demons? Before Jinu, none of the Huntrix had any idea that demons were former people, let alone that they had emotions. Were they lied to, because hunting demons would have been more difficult if they knew it potentially was a loved one? I don’t think that is the case, because – although demons were once people – they are still actively hunting humans. So again, why have they been lied to about the nature of the demons? I think it is because there is a chance for demons to revert to their humanity. At the end of the movie, when Jinu accepted his past (let go of the shame), he was able to get his soul back. He then proceeded to give it to Rumi, and she used it to defeat Gwi-ma (self-love/acceptance defeats shame).

Another question I got but have no answer to is regarding the marks. The marks represent shame, and it is how Gwi-ma can control the demons, and yet he wasn’t able to control Rumi, why is that? The people who went to the Saja Boys concert could also hear Gwi-ma’s voice, though they are humans – how and why? He was able to control them, including The Huntrix, until they heard Rumi’s voice. And the last question that got me pondering – why aren’t the rest of humanity made aware of the existence of demons? We know people can see them, as during the opening scene, some of the demons appeared in the audience of The Huntrix concert – they can see them, but how come only the demon hunters are aware of their existence? Hopefully, the next movie is a prequel that answers some of these questions.
